Plaster has long been the finish of choice for concrete or guanine pools, but today’s new technology has given way to an abundance of pool finishes, each with their own pros and cons.

Pros: It is economical, easy to install, and the most common choice for in-ground swimming pools.

Cons: The water chemistry can make this ‘soft’ finish vulnerable. This type of plaster shouldn’t have noticeable erosion for at least five to seven years, with maintaining proper water chemistry.

Colored Pool Plaster: This is when a dye is added to the traditional white pool plaster. New technology has allowed for chemicals to be added to the plaster to reduce cracking, etching and mottling.

Pros: Still an economical choice and there are many colors to choose from to match the environment. For instance, black plaster will have a very dramatic look and help keep your pool warm during the winter.  While grey plaster has a calming feel and complements stone decking.

Cons: Over time, the colors may naturally fade. Debris such as leaves and high levels of metal in the water can stain colored plaster.

Crushed Quartz Additives: Combines strength and beauty for a stunning swimming pool finish.

Pros: Comes in a variety of colors and adds dimension, comes in slip resistant or smooth. The additive makes the plaster very durable and can extend the life of the plaster.

Cons: The quartz additive can end up costing a little more than the classic plaster.

Pebble Finish: Gives a natural, sandy beach finish.

Pros: Polished pebbles creates a natural, non-slip bumpy surface, stain resistant, finish last 15 to 20 years. Several shades to choose from, all are low maintenance. Black pebbles give an elegant look to the pool water.

Cons: More expensive than plaster and may take longer to install.

Glass Tile: Luxurious and shimmering pool finish.

Pros: If maintained glass tiles can last for decades and they come in an endless variety of colors and designs (even glow in the dark).

Cons: A glass tile finish can be pretty expensive depending on the color and design. It also takes longer to install than plaster.
